You can’t necessarily judge a beach by images you find online. A beach can look completely different in person depending on the time of day, weather, season, wind, crowds and accessibility. When choosing a location for your Maui beach wedding, consider these factors.

Accessibility
How easy is it to get from the parking area to the ceremony location? This is especially important if parents, grandparents or other guests will be attending.
Walking through deep sand isn’t easy for everyone, and some locations have more convenient access than others.
Privacy
Maui’s beaches are public places. That means you should not expect to have an entire beach to yourself, even if a photograph makes it look secluded.
A good wedding photographer takes the public nature of the beach into consideration and positions your ceremony in a way that creates an intimate experience while respecting other beachgoers.
Time of Day
The time of your ceremony can make a huge difference. Morning weddings can offer beautiful light and cooler temperatures. And sunset weddings can provide beautiful golden light for photographs.
The best time depends on your location, the time of year and the experience you want to create.
Location
Different areas of Maui have different personalities. Some couples love the beaches of West Maui. Others prefer South Maui.
Your ideal location may depend on where you’re staying, how far you want to travel and the type of scenery you’re looking for. This is one area where the local knowledge of your wedding planner can save you a great deal of time.
Do You Need a Permit for a Maui Beach Wedding?
Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources has a permitting process for commercial beach weddings and other commercial activities on eligible State shorelines. The State also maintains a list of permitted beach locations.
All wedding planners are required to secure the proper amount of liability insurance required by the State in order to obtain a beach permit for weddings. This is covered in the cost of our beach package.
We will be obtaining the beach permit for you, which is why working with an experienced Maui wedding planner can make the planning process much easier.
There are certain State requirements which must be adhered to, which will be provided in your confirmation email.
One of the main requirements is having no more than 30 people, including the vendors. In addition, no chairs or structures are allowed, no alcohol, and the beach must be left in condition in which it is found.
If your wedding is taking place within a Hawaii State Park, different requirements may apply. State Parks says Special Use Permits may be required for weddings and other special events, and applications generally must be submitted at least 45 days before the requested date.
Don’t assume that because a beach is public, you can simply hold a wedding there without checking the requirements.
Getting Legally Married in Maui
If you want your Maui wedding to be legally recognized by the State of Hawaii, you’ll need a Hawaii marriage license. The current process is relatively straightforward.
You will need to:
- Complete the Hawaii marriage-license application online.
- Pay the required fee.
- Meet together in person with an authorized marriage-license agent.
- Bring valid government-issued photo identification.
- Have your official wedding ceremony within 30 days after the license is issued.
There is no waiting period after the license is issued, and the current cost is $65, plus $5 payable to the agent at your appointment. Hawaii does not require couples to be Hawaii residents or U.S. citizens.
For couples coming from other countries, your marriage license agent will provide an Apostille, which will recognize your legal marriage in most countries.

What Should You Wear for a Maui Beach Wedding?

For brides, lightweight wedding dresses can be particularly beautiful on the beach. Consider how your dress will move in the breeze and how easy it will be to walk through sand. A long train may look gorgeous in photographs, but it can require more attention on a beach.
For grooms, lightweight dress pants, a linen suit, dress shirt or other breathable clothing can work beautifully in Maui.
And what about shoes? Many couples decide to go barefoot for their ceremony. There’s something wonderfully relaxed about standing barefoot in the sand while saying your vows.

What Time Should You Have Your Maui Beach Wedding?
Based on years of experience, the best times for a Maui wedding are either morning or sunset. The middle of the day not only tends to be far too hot, but there will be lots more people on the beach.
For a morning wedding, we recommend starting your ceremony by 9am. This way you’ll be finished with the ceremony and photos before it gets too hot and the beachgoers begin arriving.
For a sunset wedding, we’ll schedule your wedding anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half prior to sunset depending on the size of your photography package, which is based on the number of guests you have. More guests equals more time required for photos.
We end the photo session just as the sun is setting into the Pacific, though sometimes the colors linger for some closing light shots.

Many couples like combining their wedding and honeymoon into one, spending far less than having a wedding and reception at home.
The cost of a Maui beach wedding can vary significantly depending on the number of guests and the services you choose. A simple ceremony for two will obviously cost less than a wedding with photography, videography, flowers, music, hair and makeup, an officiant and several guests.

What happens if it rains on our wedding day?
As we all know, weather can be unpredictable. It’s best to rely on your wedding planner and not checking the weather report, which could cause unnecessary stress.
This is because the weather varies wildly around the island, and can change from one minute to the next. Maui has micro climates which vary depending on what part of the island you are on.
If there is a high likelihood of rain, we have several options. We can hold the wedding in your condo or hotel balcony, we can move your wedding down the coast to a different beach, or we can schedule to another day that fits with the vendors schedules.
Fortunately, the South side of the island is considered the dry side and gets very little rain. Lahaina is also considered the dry side, with a little more chance of rain and wind as you head north towards Kapalua.
