When couples tell me they’re dreaming about a Maui wedding, they often picture the obvious things—the ocean, tropical flowers, beautiful sunsets and warm island breezes.

And yes, all of those things are part of what makes Maui such a wonderful place to get married.

But after years of planning weddings here, I’ve learned that what makes a wedding truly special isn’t how many tropical decorations you can add.

It’s how the day feels.

What Does the Aloha Spirit Mean for Your Wedding?

The word aloha is often translated as love, affection, peace or compassion. But I think one of the best ways to bring that feeling into your wedding is simply to slow down and be present.

Your wedding doesn’t have to be complicated.

Take time to enjoy the people who traveled to Maui to celebrate with you. Look around during your ceremony. Listen to the ocean. Take a few quiet minutes with your new spouse after you say your vows.

Those are the moments you’ll remember.

Let Maui Be Part of Your Wedding

One of the wonderful things about a Maui wedding is that you don’t have to create an elaborate backdrop.

The island has already done that for you.

The ocean, mountains, palm trees, tropical flowers and evening sky provide a beautiful setting all on their own.

I often encourage couples not to worry about the decorations. Instead, choose a few details that complement the natural surroundings.

A beautiful bouquet.

A flower lei.

Music that has meaning to you.

A flower circle in the sand.

A simple color palette inspired by the island.

Sometimes less really is more.

Choose a Wedding Location That Fits You

There isn’t one perfect Maui wedding location for every couple.

Some couples want a beautiful beach. Others prefer an ocean-view lawn or another private setting.

When I help couples choose a location, I want to know more than what looks pretty in a photograph.

Where are you staying?

How many guests will you have?

Do you have older family members who may have difficulty walking on sand?

Do you want privacy, convenience or a particular type of scenery?

Those answers help me recommend a location that makes sense for your wedding.

Add Personal Details Instead of More Decorations

If you want your Maui wedding to feel special, start with things that have meaning to you.

You might:

  • Write your own vows.
  • Choose a song that’s special to your relationship.
  • Exchange leis.
  • Gift step-children with a special piece of Maui jewelry they’ll treasure.
  • Present leis to your children or parents in the ceremony.
  • Carry a family keepsake.
  • Choose flowers in your favorite colors.
  • Plan a special dinner afterward.
  • Spend a little private time together after the ceremony.

These are the details that make your wedding feel like your wedding.

Give Your Guests a Maui Experience

If your family and friends are traveling to Maui for your wedding, think about making the trip special for them, too.

You might arrange a group dinner, a sunset outing, a luau the night prior to your wedding, or a daytime activity everyone can enjoy. I’ve worked with an activities concierge for over 25 years who can book all of your group activities for you so you can all be booked together.  And the best part is, there’s no prepayment and every guest can pay their own way.

You don’t have to organize every minute of their vacation. Even giving your guests suggestions and helping them coordinate activities can make their trip easier.

And it gives everyone another opportunity to spend time together.

Don’t Forget to Enjoy Your Own Wedding

This is probably my biggest piece of advice.

It’s easy to spend so much time planning your wedding that you forget to actually experience it.

Once the day arrives, let someone else worry about the details.

You shouldn’t be checking whether the flowers arrived or wondering where the photographer is.

You should be listening to your vows.

Looking at your family.

Holding your partner’s hand.

And taking in the fact that you’re getting married in Maui.

That’s what the day is really about.

A Maui Wedding Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

After years of planning destination weddings, I’ve learned that the weddings I remember most aren’t necessarily the biggest or most elaborate.

They’re the ones where the couple was relaxed, present and genuinely enjoying the people around them.

Maui provides the beauty.

Your relationship provides the meaning.

And the little personal touches are what make the day yours.

Let Your Maui Wedding Be About Love

You don’t have to recreate someone else’s Maui wedding.

You don’t need every tropical flower or every trendy decoration.

Start with the two of you.

Think about what you love, what matters to you and how you want to remember this day years from now.

Then let Maui provide the backdrop.

That’s where the real aloha comes in.
