If you’re dreaming of a Maui beach wedding, the best beaches aren’t always the best beach for getting married.
And it’s not always as simple as choosing the prettiest photograph you see online. And this is where a wedding planner becomes invaluable.
I’ve been planning destination weddings in Hawaii for many years, and one of the things I’ve learned is that the best Maui wedding beach isn’t necessarily the same for every couple.
Some couples want dramatic scenery and beautiful sunset photographs, while others want a quieter setting. Some need easy access for older family members.
Others care most about having soft sand, beautiful tropical surroundings or a particular view. However, for some, driving distance is a determining factor.
When helping a couple decide on the best beach for their wedding, I usually begin by asking where they’ll be staying on Maui.
If they’re staying in the Lahaina area, my next question is, which is more important to them, privacy or convenience.
If it’s privacy, I recommend they drive to Makena on the South side where there are less people and less crowded beaches. If it’s convenience, I’ll recommend a beach in Kapalua.
And there’s another important consideration: not every Maui beach is appropriate or authorized for a commercial wedding. State shoreline weddings can be subject to Hawaii DLNR permitting requirements, and locations managed by other agencies can have their own rules.
So before you fall in love with a photograph on Pinterest, let’s talk about what actually makes a good Maui wedding beach.
What Makes a Great Maui Wedding Beach?
When I help couples choose a Maui wedding location, I look at much more than the scenery.
Here are some of the things I consider:
- How beautiful the setting is for the ceremony and photographs
- How easy the beach is to access
- Parking and walking distance
- The size of your wedding group
- How crowded the beach may be
- Time of day
- Wind and weather conditions
- The type of photographs you want
- Accessibility for older guests
- Whether the location is appropriate for your ceremony
- Current permit and location requirements
A beach can be absolutely gorgeous but still not be the right choice for your wedding.
That’s why I always encourage couples to choose a beach based on the experience they want, not just the photograph they saw online.
Some of the Best Maui Wedding Beaches to Consider
Maui has an incredible variety of beaches and coastal settings.
Rather than saying there is one “best” beach, I’m going to give you some of the locations couples commonly consider and explain what makes each one special.
1. Polo Beach – South Maui
Polo Beach is one of the locations worth considering if you love a classic Maui beach setting.
Located in the Wailea area, Polo has a beautiful curved shoreline, soft sand and the kind of tropical scenery many couples picture when they imagine a Maui beach wedding.
It can also provide beautiful sunset photography.

- Beautiful tropical scenery
- Sandy beach
- Attractive setting for photographs
- South Maui location
- Beautiful evening light
Things to consider
Like any public beach, conditions and crowds can vary.
If you have guests who have difficulty walking on sand, you’ll also want to consider accessibility when choosing your ceremony location.
The best location isn’t simply the one that looks beautiful. It needs to work for your particular wedding.
2. Makena Cove
Makena Cove is one of Maui’s smaller and more intimate coastal settings.
Its rock formations and surrounding scenery can create a beautiful backdrop for wedding photography. During the morning, if the skies are clear, you also get the beautiful clear turquoise water you don’t find anywhere else on the island.
Because it is a smaller setting, I especially like the idea of considering it for couples who want a more intimate wedding experience.
Why couples love this type of setting
- Intimate atmosphere
- Beautiful rock formations
- Tropical Maui scenery
- Excellent photography possibilities
- Romantic setting for a small wedding
But remember that a small beach can become crowded, particularly at popular times of day. Which is why I recommend a morning wedding at Makena Cove, or Secret beach, as it’s sometimes called.
If privacy is important to you, timing can be just as important as location.
3. Po’olenalena Beach
Po’olenalena is another South Maui location that couples may want to consider when looking for a beautiful beach setting.It has a natural, tropical feeling and can provide lovely backgrounds for wedding photography.
This is the beach I recommend the most for just the couple or with a small amount of guests. Because it’s hidden by a condominium complex, most people don’t know it’s there, so the only other people on the beach are usually the people staying at the condos.
The parking is limited at this location, which is why it’s best for a handful of guests. Another reason I like this beach is because there’s a sidewalk leading down to the beach, with a hose near the beach to rinse your feet off.
I recommend this beach for sunset weddings because most of the tenants have already left to get ready for dinner. Sometimes you can have the entire beach to yourselves.
4. White Rock Beach – Palauea
White Rock Beach, also known as Palauea, is a beautiful South Maui setting with soft sand and natural rock formations.
Its intimate scale can make it appealing for smaller wedding celebrations.
The combination of sand, ocean and lava rock can also give your photographer several different backgrounds without having to travel far.
White Rock may be worth considering if you want:
- A smaller beach setting
- Natural scenery
- Rock formations for photographs
- A relaxed Maui atmosphere
- An intimate wedding
As always, confirm current wedding and permit requirements before planning your ceremony at any public beach.
5. Maluaka Beach
Maluaka is another South Maui beach worth considering. It’s located at the end of a resort, at the end of Makena, so it’s usually not crowded.
This is the beach I recommend if you are having more than a handful of guests. It’s a beach park, so there’s ample parking and the convenience of a public restroom.
Some beaches are more open.
Some have more dramatic rock formations.
Some have a more palm trees.
Some may be better suited to your guests.
And some simply have the feeling that makes you say, “This is it.”
6. Kapalua Bay
Kapalua Bay on the West side is one of Maui’s most recognizable beach settings and has been voted as the #1 beach in the world more than once.
The crescent-shaped bay, tropical vegetation and surrounding scenery make it easy to understand why couples are attracted to this part of West Maui.
It can be particularly beautiful for photographs.
However, popular locations can also mean more people, especially during busy times.
If you love Kapalua Bay, I recommend thinking carefully about when you want your ceremony rather than assuming any time of day will provide the same experience.
7. D.T. Fleming Beach
D.T. Fleming Beach is located in West Maui and offers a beautiful natural setting with a broad sandy shoreline.
It can be especially attractive to couples staying in the Kapalua area who want a beach wedding away from the resort area without traveling to South Maui.
One thing to keep in mind with Maui beaches is that wind and ocean conditions can vary considerably. DT Fleming beach park is a little more north of West Maui than Kapalua beach, so expect more wind and more possibility of some light passing rain.
A beautiful beach isn’t automatically the best beach for every wedding. That’s why local knowledge matters.
South Maui vs. West Maui for Your Wedding
One of the first decisions I often encourage couples to make is whether they want their wedding experience centered around South Maui or West Maui.
Both areas are beautiful. But they have different personalities.
South Maui
South Maui includes areas such as Kihei, Wailea and Makena.
Couples are often drawn here because of the variety of beaches, resorts, restaurants and activities.
If your wedding group is staying in South Maui, choosing a nearby wedding location can make the day much easier for everyone.
West Maui
West Maui includes areas such as Napili and Kapalua.
The scenery is spectacular, and couples staying in this part of the island may prefer to keep their wedding close to their accommodations.
If your guests are staying in West Maui, I generally think it’s worth considering a location nearby rather than making everyone spend a large part of the day traveling across the island.
What’s the Best Maui Beach for a Sunset Wedding?
If sunset photography is important to you, tell your photographer and wedding planner that from the beginning.
The exact quality of the light depends on the time of year, weather and location.
And here’s something many couples don’t think about:
Sunset is popular.
Even though there may be other weddings nearby, most of the beachgoers are beginning to head back to their hotel to get ready for dinner.
Morning ceremonies can be beautiful too.
What’s the Best Maui Beach for a Small Wedding?
For a small wedding, I would look for a location that feels intimate rather than choosing a huge beach simply because it is famous.
A smaller wedding can be beautifully suited to a more intimate setting.
But don’t confuse “small” with “private.”
All beaches in Hawaii are public. Even a small beach can have other visitors enjoying the area.
That’s why I prefer to set realistic expectations with my couples rather than promise something that isn’t possible.
What’s the Best Maui Beach for Older Guests?
This is one of the questions that doesn’t get enough attention.
If your parents, grandparents or other guests have mobility concerns, don’t choose a beach based solely on how beautiful it looks in photographs.
Consider:
- Parking
- Walking distance
- Sand conditions
- Access to the ceremony area
- Restrooms
- Shade
- How long guests will need to stand
- Whether chairs are permitted or appropriate
The perfect beach for a couple in their twenties may not be the best beach for a wedding that includes grandparents.
While setting up chairs for wedding ceremony on any beach is not permitted, you’re allowed to bring a beach chair for any elderly in your party who will need to sit during your ceremony.
And that’s okay. Your wedding location should work for the people you love.
Are Maui Beaches Private?
No.
Maui’s public beaches are public spaces.
This is something I think every couple planning a Maui beach wedding should understand before arriving.
You may have a beautiful ceremony setup and a photographer ready to capture the moment, but other people may still be enjoying the beach.
That’s part of having a wedding in a beautiful public setting.
If complete privacy is important to you, a private estate, resort or other private venue may be a better choice.
Do You Need a Permit for a Maui Beach Wedding?
This is an important part of planning a Maui beach wedding.
Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources has a specific process for commercial activities and beach weddings on eligible State shorelines. The State provides a list of permitted beach locations and requires applicants to comply with its commercial activity terms and conditions.
DLNR’s current terms also place restrictions on items that can be brought onto permitted State beach areas. For example, structures such as arches, tents, tables and many other setup items are generally prohibited, with limited exceptions.
If you’re considering a particular beach, verify the current rules before making your plans.
And if your ceremony is at a State Park, separate Special Use Permit requirements may apply. Hawaii State Parks specifically lists weddings among the activities that may require a Special Use Permit.
This is another reason an experienced Maui wedding planner can be so helpful.
What Time of Day Is Best for a Maui Beach Wedding?
There isn’t one answer.
It depends on your priorities.
Morning
Morning weddings can offer:
- Cooler temperatures
- Softer light
- Potentially fewer people
- A peaceful atmosphere
Afternoon
We never recommend an afternoon ceremony on the beach due to the sun and heat between the hours of 10am and 5pm, unless a couple is set on that day and the morning and sunset times are already taken.
If you’re planning on going to a luau with your guests afterwards, their check-in times are fairly early, so in this case we’ll move the wedding an hour or so earlier than ideal.
Sunset
Sunset can provide gorgeous golden light and romantic photographs.
But it is also a popular time for beach weddings.
So when you tell me, “I want a sunset wedding,” I will advise you on how busy that particular beach may be in the late afternoon.
What If the Weather Doesn’t Cooperate?
Maui’s weather is one of the things we love about the island—but Mother Nature doesn’t take wedding appointments.
Clouds, wind and rain can happen.
That’s why I always encourage couples to have a plan for unexpected weather.
The good news is that a brief shower doesn’t necessarily mean your wedding day is ruined.
Sometimes the clouds create beautiful photographs.
Sometimes the rain passes quickly.
And sometimes we simply need to adjust the timing.
The important thing is having someone experienced there who knows what to do.
Don’t Choose Your Maui Wedding Beach From a Photograph Alone
This may be my most important advice.
Pinterest and Instagram can give you wonderful ideas.
But photographs don’t tell you:
- How easy the beach is to reach
- How crowded it becomes
- What the wind is like
- Where your guests will park
- How difficult the sand is to walk through
- What time of day looks best
- Whether your ceremony plans are permitted
- What restrictions apply to the location
A photograph shows you what a beach can look like.
