After years of planning destination weddings in Hawaii, I’ve found that the most memorable weddings aren’t necessarily the biggest or most elaborate. They’re the ones that include personal touches that reflect the couple.
Here are some of my favorite ways to make your Maui beach wedding uniquely yours.
1. Write Your Own Vows
Your vows are one of the easiest ways to make your ceremony personal.
Think about how you met, what you love about each other, the experiences you’ve shared and what you’re promising for your future together.
Your vows don’t have to be long or poetic. They just need to sound like you.
2. Make Your Lei Exchange Meaningful
A lei exchange is a beautiful way to incorporate a Hawaiian element into your wedding ceremony.
Which is why we include two fresh flower leis in the basic packages. Your officiant will begin your ceremony with a lei exchange. Use this time as an opportunity to focus on each other and become really present in the moment.
3. Choose Flowers That Reflect You
Don’t feel like you have to choose flowers simply because they’re popular for Hawaii weddings.
Think about your favorite colors and flowers—or even a flower that reminds you of someone special.
Your bouquet and floral details should complement the natural beauty of Maui rather than compete with it.
4. Choose Music With Meaning
Music can bring back memories instantly.
Choose a song that reminds you of when you met, your first date, your engagement or another important moment in your relationship.
You don’t have to choose a song simply because it sounds “Hawaiian.” Choose music that means something to you.
If you’re having a wedding on a State beach, be sure to check the current rules regarding music and equipment. Hawaii DLNR regulations can restrict amplified music and certain equipment on permitted beach locations. (dlnr.hawaii.gov)
5. Include Something From Home
Bring a small item that has special meaning to your relationship or family.
It could be a piece of jewelry, a family keepsake, a photograph or something you’ve had for years.
It doesn’t have to be visible to everyone. Sometimes the smallest details become the most meaningful memories.
6. Give Your Guests a Maui Experience
If you’re bringing family and friends to Maui, consider planning something everyone can enjoy together.
A group dinner, a luau, sunset outing, snorkeling trip or another Maui activity can turn your wedding into a memorable vacation for everyone.

7. Let Make Time for Just the Two of You
Your wedding day can become surprisingly busy.
Between photographs, family, vendors and congratulations, you may have very little time alone.
Schedule a few minutes just for yourselves. Take a walk on the beach, or watch the last remnants of the sunset together.
However you decide, give yourselves a chance to stop and cherish the moment.
Those quiet moments may become some of your favorite memories.
8. Let Your Photographer Capture Your Relationship
Tell your photographer what you want your photographs to feel like. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you have something particular in mind.
Do you prefer candid photographs? Romantic portraits? Fun photographs? Dramatic sunset images?
Your photographer can capture much more than the ceremony itself when they understand what matters to you.
9. Don’t Overdecorate the Beach
Maui is already beautiful.
You have the ocean, the sky, the mountains, the sand and the tropical surroundings.
You don’t necessarily need elaborate decorations.
In fact, Hawaii DLNR rules for commercial activity on State public beaches restrict many structures and decorations, including arches, tables, chairs and tents. (dlnr.hawaii.gov)
If you want to accentuate your “altar,” a flower circle made from locally sourced tropical flowers and greenery makes a bold statement and a beautiful accent in your wedding photos.
The Most Important Tip: Make It About You
Pinterest and Instagram are wonderful for inspiration, but don’t let them convince you that you need to recreate someone else’s wedding.
Ask yourselves:
What makes us unique?
What memories do you share? What traditions matter to you? What do you want your family and friends to remember?
Those answers will give you better wedding ideas than any Pinterest board.
